About me

Hello! I'm James, a current 3rd Year Physics student at the University of Sheffield. I have plenty of tutoring experience at both GCSE and A-level. During my time at sixth form, I tutored GCSE Physics students from my old secondary school. In my first year of university, the Head of Science and Maths' from my sixth form college got in touch and asked if I was available to tutor his son in A-level Physics. In my first year of university, the Head of Science and Maths' from my sixth form college got in touch and asked if I was available to tutor his son in A-level Physics. I tutored him in the busy revision period running up to exams. With this variety of tutoring experience, I feel I am equipped to help students at any level and ability.

I am familiar with the styles of questions posed by various exam boards and what examiners look for. During my exam revision at GCSE and A-level I revised from various boards in order to be ready for any potential curveballs from my own exam board. I enjoy teaching and particularly helping students to grasp difficult concepts, however long this may take for the ideas to sink in, and I like to think this reassures students that they can ask any question, however simple the answer may seem.

About my sessions

From personal experience with my own studies and tutoring in the past, I believe students learn best by actually 'doing', so my lessons will mostly focus around worked examples to past exam questions and questions I have written, along with any concept explanations if required beforehand.

From personal experience with my own studies and tutoring in the past, I believe students learn best by actually 'doing', so my lessons will mostly focus around worked examples to past exam questions and questions I have written, along with any concept explanations if required beforehand.

Depending on the level and ability of the student, I will begin with a short conversation about the concepts and where they are up to, in order to gauge where is best to start. If the concepts are well understood, it may be best to jump straight into exam questions, whereas some students may need a brief explanation of concepts beforehand. This will depend on the topic and the student. Depending on how the student receives the worked examples, I may set a question for the student to do independently which we will then go through together. Based on how they do with this, we can move on to something else or do some more practice. I may also set work for the student to do in their own time which we can review next time if we agree that it would be beneficial.
