About me

I am going into my third year studying English Literature at Durham University where I pursue my love for reading in an academic setting. I achieved a first at the end of my second year. I am going into my third year studying English Literature at Durham University where I pursue my love for reading in an academic setting. I achieved a first at the end of my second year. My time at university has proved integral to the development of my organisational skills and helped foster the independence required to be successful.

Although admittedly a very stressful time, I believe that this period was extremely essential to the progression of key skills required for tutoring which I continue to work on. Since beginning university, I have become involved in similar tutoring schemes, such as acting as a mentor for 'SHAPED', a university organisation that supports academic development. This involves drop-in sessions to offer advice, tutoring and any other support to younger students. I am also a ‘rep’ for prospective students which allows me to encourage others to join the subject I love. In the summer of 2018, as part of the 'Hatfield Nepal Project' I volunteered to teach English and social sciences at HVP-Nepal's charity run school in Kathmandu.

English Literature is so appealing to me as I believe it provides you with the freedom to explore areas of texts which specifically interest you. Regardless of your interests, any English student can find common ground, but also gain important insight from the discussion of contrasting ideas.

About my sessions

My lessons are geared towards GCSE and A Level students who are ready to take an active role in their learning. I am enthusiastic about taking a student-centred approach and I will use the early tutorials to identify the current level of the student as well as their own personal goals and targets. This will involve a discussion on current working grades, predicted grades, what grade the student is hoping for and their expectations for each session. I hope to promote the discussion of individual thought processes as well as new ways of viewing texts. I feel that it is extremely important to have the ability to build your own arguments in order gain a comprehensive understanding. To ensure each tutorial remains focused on a targeted topic I will begin with a set of learning objectives specifically catered to each tutee. This will involve a variety of learning techniques which allow the student to integrate subject content and exam technique. The latter can often be overlooked even though it is an important skill to master in order to succeed in both GCSE and A level exams. I will also take time to discuss grades received from school work if the student pleases as this is another important indicator of improvement and development. If I find that the tutee is not progressing as I had hoped I will adapt my methods in order to ensure that each student benefits from my sessions.

Izzie is so helpful and great at helping to understand the novels, even when we had some difficulties with the sound she still managed to give a good lesson!
