About me

I am a second year History student at Durham University and I am really enjoying my degree. In addition to studying, I also enjoy playing netball for my uni, as well as rowing, the latter representing a sport I had never encountered before uni! These interests reflect my innately sporty disposition - a quality that has also enabled me to form life-long friendships.

In addition to studying, I also enjoy playing netball for my uni, as well as rowing, the latter representing a sport I had never encountered before uni! These interests reflect my innately sporty disposition - a quality that has also enabled me to form life-long friendships.

I am offering my tutoring for History, English Literature & Mathematics. These are the subjects I studied at ALevel, achieving A*A*A respectively. I have loved the challenge of Maths for as long as I can remember, and I particularly enjoy the finality of the subject, in terms of reaching the correct answer to a complicated problem. Similarly, my passion for the past permeates all aspects of my life. Whether it be choosing to study in the stunning historical city of Durham; or studying my family tree since age 10, the passion I have for my degree subject is truly limitless. Linked to this, I thoroughly enjoy English Literature, and more specifically those works which possess a level of

historical accuracy or context. For instance, Shakespeare’s motivations behind the writing of Macbeth, one of his

most famous tragic plays.

Lastly, I will seek to help my student to improve by providing them with all the necessary tools in order to gain confidence and knowledge, within a subject that they struggle to enjoy, or a topic that they find particularly challenging.

About my sessions

My sessions will be structured around a pre-arranged topic. I seek to break down the topic into different sections, for instance, with History I would split the topic into ‘Aims, Causes, Context, Key People, Summary of event, Response, Impact, and Success/Failure in short/long term?’

With English, my approach to structure would be slightly different. I would either break down the plot to

I would either break down the plot to

the area of focus – the session could be focused around a specific chapter of the text, or a key theme; both accompanied by the relevant context of the literary work.

Maths would prompt me to adopt a different structure. I would break down the main points or ‘rules’

of a specific topic – such as fractions. This would form the foundations of the session, which we would then build on by putting this knowledge into practice. I would also include some past exam questions, which would get increasingly difficult, such as introducing worded questions or setting questions which were poorly answered in past examinations.

For all three of these subjects I will set extra work for the students to complete in their own time, outside of the session. This could be in the form of a worksheet (Maths) or preparing a specific revision topic (History & English). I would then go over this with the student at the start of the next session and add any points that they might have missed.

Holly has been a great help with planning essays for English Literature and making sense of the question. I’ve also developed a good understanding of poems that we’ve been through together.
