About me

As someone who's chosen to study medicine, I wish to be a helpful person in all facets of life. Being a tutor offers me the opportunity of helping people with their studies, and I have been in their position during the last few years so I believe I can help with the process of revision and exams as well as the university application process. I am in the medics music society at university and I have had to handle music commitments during school so I could offer advice with managing studies around hobbies too. Doctors have to be able to communicate with patients in a manner that they can understand; I believe this is a skill which is vital for a tutor in terms of explaining tricky concepts and I am developing it constantly.

I've previously mentored for my DofE award where I helped a struggling student achieve an A grade in GCSE chemistry. My teaching style is flexible and it revolves around the student in terms of what their weaknesses are and which concepts they struggle to understand. I personally believe that an active learning approach is fundamental for success in exams i.e. practising questions rather than simply reading over notes.

I really want to be of help and I think I have a lot to offer as a tutor so let me know if you need me.

About my sessions

Tutorials will involve a period of review of the last session and, in addition to explaining tricky concepts and questions, I will also provide advice in terms of study and exam skills. I will set a few questions at the end of each tutorial as a form of homework to help the student retain information from the tutorial. I will prepare for tutorials by familiarising myself with the syllabus and past papers as well as my own experiences of exams; this will allow me to identify the most important, difficult topics, prepre questions for the tutorial and point the student towards specific areas of revision.

For a student to be motivated to learn, an end goal is important so I will set targets and I will also ensure the student has a clear target for university/alternate pathways so that they having something to work towards. I will occasionally set small tests to measure progress and help the student see what needs to be done to meet their targets.

Questions Akash has answered

What are the adaptations of a xerophyte?

Xerophytes are a type of plant which can survive in extremely dry conditions; an obvious example is a cactus or any similar plant that lives in the desert. In order to survive on small amounts of water, xerophytes have made structural adaptations to minimise water loss (via transpiration) and also increase water uptake from the ground. Adaptations include having needle-like leaves which have a very small surface area and a few sunken stomata to reduce transpiration, having a thick waxy cuticle which also prevents water loss, and having deep roots which increase the chance of finding water underground.Xerophytes are a type of plant which can survive in extremely dry conditions; an obvious example is a cactus or any similar plant that lives in the desert.
