About me

Hi! My name is Bryony and I graduated from the University of Bristol in 2017 with a BA (Hons) degree in Spanish. I chose to study Spanish as I have spent a large portion of my life in Spain, learning the language as I went, and so it holds a special place in my heart. I am able to to tutor at all levels, and have extensive experience doing so. Please feel free to ask me for details of this!

At school I completed my Spanish GCSE two years early, having had private tutoring. I went on to achieve highly in Spanish IB and so I understand what helps a student succeed; patience, understanding, and clarity. Furthermore, having completed my degree, I have the benefit of hindsight in understanding what it takes at each and every level to achieve the best possible grades.

About my sessions

I intend to ensure that each session is tailored to a student's individual needs. I would like to find out their strengths and weaknesses in order to make sure that the time is used most efficiently. I would also like to take the time to get to know each tutee as I am aware, as a practical learner myself, that every individual has a unique learning style and this is critical to their successful understanding.

Whilst studying at all levels I found practice questions, either completing them or planning their answers, the most effective way to measure how much I had improved and so I hope this technique will give my tutees valuable evidence of their improvement over the course of our sessions, as I know that this confidence boost is conducive to happy and effective learning!

Questions Bryony has answered

How do I know when to use the imperfect tense of the preterite tense?

Both the imperfect tense and the preterite tense are used to describe the past. However, they are used to describe different things. The imperfect tense is used to describe actions that happened repeatedly and over a long period of time. For example: "Iba al colegio en coche" (I went to school by car). Using the imperfect form of IR here ("iba") makes this sentence mean that I always used to travel to school by car. On the other hand, the preterite tense is used to describe actions that happened once and are now over. Using the same example: "Ayer, fui al colegio en coche". Using the preterite form of IR here ("fui") means that yesterday I went to school by car, as a single event that has now finished. Using both forms in one sentence respectively, an example could be: "En mi primer año de colegio venía al colegio en coche, pero ayer vine en autobús." This means: "In my first year of school I used to come to school by car, but yesterday I came by bus." It is clear here that coming to school by car was a repeated action but that the trip by bus was a one off. Both the imperfect tense and the preterite tense are used to describe the past.
