About me

I am studying for a BA in German and History at the University of Southampton. Being half Austrian and having spent my early childhood in Austria, I wanted to break away from a regional dialect and learn standard German. Most people have heard of the expression: “Deutsche Sprache, schwere Sprache”. This quote is one of the main reasons I chose to study German, as I like to stretch myself and I hope that I can inspire students to also do so. Apart from trying to push myself, I chose German because it is one of the most important languages worldwide, being the 2nd most important language in Europe. Not only this, but the German language has so many aspects to it, with all its different regional dialects, the language really is multi-faceted, so there is always an opportunity to expand your knowledge with German!

When studying for my A Level exam, my teacher would always say: “Űbung macht den Meister” and I became aware of how true this is! The University of Southampton ranks fourth best for languages, so the standard for German was high and it made me realise that practice really is the way forward!

I believe I can help students, because fundamentally German grammar is like a jigsaw puzzle: it has many pieces which all fit together to make it correct. I’ll identify what new pieces the student has been able to piece together and where there are still gaps, which we can work on.

About my sessions

I believe that perseverance, patience and method is all it takes to make any improvement to German. The most important aspect to encourage learning is to have faith in yourself! German is a hard language and you need to realise that you can’t understand every single word!

Breaking German grammar into steps really helps when working through past exam papers with a tutor and talking through the method. One step I found useful when studying for my A Level exam was to organise prepositions into anagrams, which made selecting the correct tense a lot easier!

Listening to the student’s weak points and getting to know their best learning style will be key to the sessions’ structures. After explaining the concept to the student using diagrams and presenting them with a step by step technique, I will demonstrate using examples. Following on, we will work through examples together, reviewing each step as we go along. Subsequently I’ll ask the student to take me through the exercises by explaining every step they take and why they do so. In this way, I’ll be able to see their thought process and put them on the right track where necessary. To end, we will review the student’s work and identify where they have progressed and struggled. In this way, we can set new goals together.

I've had 5 lessons so far and I've benefited so much. When I first started learning german I used apps, I would say they have helped me but left me confused in somethings such as grammar. If you're looking to learn how grammar works in the German language I would recommend this teacher.
