About me

I am currently a PhD student at the University of Southampton following my undergraduate course in Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford. Earth sciences consists of mostly Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Geography, and I picked this course as I loved all these subjects at school so thought through tutoring students I could help pass on my love for these subjects and my appreciation to the knowledge I have gained by studying them.

Earth sciences consists of mostly Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Geography, and I picked this course as I loved all these subjects at school so thought through tutoring students I could help pass on my love for these subjects and my appreciation to the knowledge I have gained by studying them.

Experience in tutoring:

I have tutored for many years now, so have met a wide range of personalities, and levels what people work at. I give all my students 100% and believe that if you can work out the way they learn anything is possible and they can then reach their true potential. Due to meeting and working with many people before I have found many ways to help students as they all need different support whether that means revision sessions, helping to explain misunderstood concepts, stretching them academically, building confidence or even just showing them a different side to a subject that they had never considered. This last point is very important as once a student finds something interesting within that subject the drive and enthusiasm often transfers over to the rest of their education.

I hope that this helps to get to know me a little better and I would love to meet you and your child for a quick chat about how I could help.

About my sessions

I tailor every students session to what works best for them. This is first discussed in the initial free meet-the-tutor session, where the student (+ parent) and I discuss the needs of the student, their strengths, weaknesses and how they learn best. This first meeting is so important as it helps me make my plan of how the sessions should be structured, both each individual session and the long term group of lessons.

I make sure I use both the resources specifically for the course of the student (each individual exam board) but also resources I have gathered over the years for example case studies or examples which help put a concept into context, making it both easier to understand and memorable. This not only helps but will hopefully also engage and excite the student prompting them to ask more questions and help their own learning.

If it is right for the student, I also make a spreadsheet that we both have access to. This spreadsheet outlines all the topics they need to know, the student rates their confidence of each, and each time we go over it in a session we colour a box next to it. The student is required to update their confidence levels after each session so they can see both their improvement but also their progression throughout the syllabus. When the student is ready we also do past paper questions where we go through exam techniques and answer the question, further building their skills, knowledge and confidence.

Emma tutored my son for 3 months in the run up to GCSE Geography in 2018. Emma immediately established a strong rapport him through her relaxed and reassuring manner. She adapted her tutoring to support my son’s dyslexia and enabled him to learn in an environment that was conducive to consolidating his existing knowledge but also provided strategies for dealing with the stress of exams. She was very thorough particularly with the areas that he had been struggling with. My son went on to gain excellent results in his GCSE. We fully endorse Emma as a tutor.

Emma is an amazing and knowledgeable tutor clearly dedicated to her students. She has been a tremendous support for Adam both academically and on a personal level really boosting his confidence and enthusiasm for both subjects he was studying - Geography and Physics. Her lessons were always interesting and focused; she has always followed up with additional learning material and resources she mentioned during the lessons and ensured Adam provided her with new topics he was keen to revise. I would highly recommend Emma's services and will certainly call upon her again for A Levels tutoring! Huge thanks Emma for everything that you have done!

Emma has helped Abigail with her A level Geography so much. Hopefully the results in August will reflect the hard work that both of them have put in.
