About me

People say that maths is a bit like marmite: you either love it or you hate it. So I’m used to the range of responses I get when people find out I’m studying maths at university. I understand that maths can often be a subject that holds people back, whether because it’s necessary to pass it at GCSE and you’re just not getting it, or you really wished you understood that one bit, because then you’d probably enjoy the subject! So not only am I committed to seeing you achieve the grades you deserve, but also to ensure you improve your understanding and enjoyment of maths so that it will be the grounding you need to continue into sixth form or university.

Being at university in Leeds, I’ve grown to love my independence and the responsibility this brings. I'm involved in the maths society and the Christian Union, helping at dial-a-donut events and organising pudding parties. Finding circles of people to call your surrogate family is so important in a new city.

I used to find studying for exams tedious because I hadn't found 'my way' of revising, which many people experience. Do you rewrite all your notes, or exhaust all the past paper questions you can find? The one ‘trick’ that I have found is that if you’re working through your problems with other people, then you’re likely to persevere with your revision and even begin to enjoy it.

About my sessions

Our tutorials will be structured to cover any content that you don’t understand, with the aim that you will then be able to explain it to someone else – this has always been my way to determine whether I really understand what I’ve learnt. In our first 15min meet, I’d love to hear what you’re struggling with, or if you’d just like some help with questions or exam technique to give you confidence. This way, our sessions will be completely tailored to what you need to work on. But, to give an e...

But, to give an example of a tutorial session for a student struggling with a specific topic, an hour tutorial would look a bit like this:

Cover any problems with past papers or exercises that had been set previously. Work through basic theory for the topic, including example questions to work through together to show techniques and tricks that can be applied.

I will always over-prepare for tutorial sessions, because if you’re understanding what we are going through and sailing through the questions with no problems, there’s no point lingering there and wasting your time – let’s move on to something a bit more challenging!

Abby was so helpful in the interpretation of my calculations for my maths IA. She made the concepts very simple to understand and gave me very useful advice to write my analysis. I will surely continue working with Abby!
