Hi, I'm Laura and I'm a first year DPhil student in Chemical Engineering at the University of Oxford. I have previously completed a research Masters at Imperial College London in Green Chemistry and an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry and Maths) at the University of Durham, graduating top of my year in both of these programs.

I have taken part in tutoring schemes through-out university and through this am DBS enhanced checked. I have always enjoyed helping others with concepts they find difficult or challenging, both as a tutor and with my peers. I believe that the real goal of education should be to understand the topic and questions rather than just learning the answer.

I am approachable, friendly and patient as a tutor. My A-levels are in Maths (AQA, A*), Further Maths (AQA, A), Chemistry (OCR A, A*) and Physics (OCR B: Advancing Physics, A*), although I am willing to do further research into content required for other courses if specified. I also achieved a Distinction in the Mathematics AEA, which can be a requirement for university Mathematics courses, and would be happy to give any help or guidance with this too.

About my sessions

I prefer to structure my lessons around the specific requirements of the student I am working with. However, from experience, the most successful tutorial format usually involves spending time on the key information in a topic and addressing any immediate questions the student may have, then attempting questions on the topic to reinforce the ideas and challenge them.

I prefer to structure my lessons around the specific requirements of the student I am working with. However, from experience, the most successful tutorial format usually involves spending time on the key information in a topic and addressing any immediate questions the student may have, then attempting questions on the topic to reinforce the ideas and challenge them.

I am happy to set students optional homework questions, usually covering topics or styles of questions that they have struggled with in the tutorial. While the point of these questions is not for students to 'learn' mark-schemes, answers are helpful to make sure they can see what has gone well and where they have gone wrong. Any questions they have act as a constructive lead into the following tutorial to ensure each topic is covered completely and in the required detail.

Laura has helped alot with raising my confidence with GCSE Science. She sends practice questions to help me revise and she makes sure I understand concepts when feeding back. When I needed an extra lesson because of exams, she accommodated me, in spite of being busy. She is a really good tutor.
