About me

I'm studying a BA in History at the University of Exeter, and I balance this with my other passions such as learning German and teaching here on MyTutor. I was always aiming for University because I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Nothing gives me more pride than when I see someone flourishing beyond what they thought they were limited to.

I'm studying a BA in History at the University of Exeter, and I balance this with my other passions such as learning German and teaching here on MyTutor. I was always aiming for University because I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Nothing gives me more pride than when I see someone flourishing beyond what they thought they were limited to.

I feel especially fulfilled when I can share my lived experience. I am a 3rd year Undergraduate: of course, this proves that I've made it to the next stage of my career path, and you can too. But it also means that my GCSEs and A-Levels were not so long ago. Many people forget how difficult GCSEs and A-Levels were for them. But I remember the immense pressure. I was successful in English Literature, and I was certainly confident I would one day teach this subject. But I always wished that one-to-one tuition had been more available to me, especially in History. With a lot of hard work, I became more confident ended up applying to study History at degree level - something I never saw coming! I wish I could go back and tell myself that I was capable. That is why I want to teach students here on MyTutor: I want them to have the one-to-one encouragement and support that I needed. I proved myself wrong, and now I'm studying something I'm passionate about. I want my students to realise their capability sooner than I realised mine.

About my sessions

Past exam papers and practise questions will be used as often as possible. They won't be expected to know how to answer the practise questions from the get-go. Nor will they sit their passively whilst I spell out the answer: the more they do it, the less they will fear exams.

They will construct their own questions and mark example answers. I want them to know the structure of exams like the back of their hands, and the examiner's expectations even better. Sometimes, I may ask them to teach me the content or walk me through a question. I want them to understand how to deconstruct a question and calmly plan how they will respond. I will then provide verbal feedback on any learning objectives or ideas they might be missing out. This is how I will measure progress. I may ask them to draft a small paragraph which hits the learning objectives. I will provide verbal feedback and they will annotate their paragraph with these improvements. However, I do not tend to set assignments or written work - I believe they will be getting enough of this from school!

While it will be student led, they are not on their own in this pressurised time. I will answer questions to the best of my ability, gradually decreasing my input so that the tutee does not wish I was with them in the exam!

Finally, my ideas and teaching methods are completely flexible. It will be entirely centred around their individual needs.
