About me

Hi! My name is Richard and I am currently studying Latin and Ancient Greek at Christ Church, Oxford. I have always had a passion for classical languages and have studied them since I was 11. I have also always enjoyed the challenge which Maths presents and the feeling of successfully overcoming a problem that at first looked too complicated to answer. I took Maths and further Maths at A level achieving an A* in both.

I have also always enjoyed the challenge which Maths presents and the feeling of successfully overcoming a problem that at first looked too complicated to answer. I took Maths and further Maths at A level achieving an A* in both.

Alongside my study I think it is important to balance your life with as many varying passtimes as possible. I have always played as many sports as possible and I am currently captaining my college rugby team whilst playing football, hockey and rowing at the same time. I am also the college 'Sports Rep' which means I am in charge of coordinating college sport so that as many people as possible are involved and enjoying what we have to offer.

I self funded a 6 month trip to New Zealand when I was 19 where I worked in a small primary school in Auckland. While I was there I realised how rewarding and engaging teaching can be. I was mainly with younger children helping them to read but I also worked with the older pupils in maths and in sport. I hope that I can encourage the students online with the same enthusiasm which I achieved in New Zealand and to build a healthy working relationship over an extended period of tuition.

About my sessions

My lessons will consist of presenting a problem to my students. I will give them a brief period in which to attempt the problem. If they are successful in answering it, I will move on and give them a harder question. If they are struggling, then I will offer a few hints to help them to reach the correct answer and then go back over the problem to see how they could have got it righ by themselves. If they are completely unable to answer the question then I will start from the basics and explai...

If they are completely unable to answer the question then I will start from the basics and explain it to them in a simple form before slowly exposing them to harder problems.

Over time I hope that the students will be able to consistently answer harder questions demonstrating their improvement in the subject. I also encourage students to bring questions to me which they have found difficult so that I can help them to overcome any difficulties they found at school or in their own study.

If a student prefers to be taught or to learn in a specific way then I am more than happy to structure my lessons to suit their needs.

Really clear and patient teacher, very relaxed and easy to ask any question to. Genuinely feel like I have improved a lot since starting lessons. Would highly recommend!

Richard has been an outstanding teacher! I needed help with Greek and Latin language in preparation for the Oxford CAT- he would always read the passages beforehand ready to discuss the difficult constructions and ready with helpful translation tips. He also helped me with a couple of mock interviews, not only on the ancient world (he came up with specific questions from my personal statement), but also with philosophy questions in the Oxford interview style which was really impressive! Thanks to all this help I successfully achieved an offer at my first choice college. It wouldn't have been possible without him :)
