About me

Hello! I'm Maria, I'm 20 years-old and I am currently in my final year of Psychology at University of Bath. I am originally from Brazil, born and raised, but when I was 16 I moved to the UK seeking better education and new experiences. I went to an international school in London where I took the IB, and it was one of the best experiences I could have asked for. Although I already had an interest in Psychology due to reading books, being in a multicultural environment, where each of my friends had a completely different upbringing than me ,made me even more fascinated by people and how different yet similar we all are. I know how scary and frustrating it is when you just can't seem to understand a certain subject and you feel like you just don't have the brain for it, I had this experience myself. However, hopefully with my sessions I can show the students that all you need is a little bit of assistance and some motivation to get the best results possible! In fact, I've actually used a tutor for physics and chemistry when I was in Brazil, and it definitely helped me, hopefully I can help you too!

About my sessions

I my sessions I will try to be as flexible as possible to the student's particular needs. Rather than simply explaining the subject the way I understand it, I will focus on what the student is specifically having trouble with and help them learn what they need in their own terms. In order to truly grasp a concept, it is essential that the student forms their own idea and perception of it, instead of simply trying to memorise the words on a text book. In order to achieve that, I will structure my sessions in a way that not only do I explain a concept, but also the student attempts to demonstrate their knowledge with their own words. In the beginning of the lessons we will clarify our short-term goals for the particular session but also the student's long-term goals, to give them a sense of motivation. Moreover, to encourage them to really commit I will prepare certain evaluative tasks in order to measure their progress and then adjust the session depending on how far they have come. I will always be considerate of the students personal preferences when it comes to learning style and the amount of help they prefer to receive, as each student learns at their own pace.

Questions Maria Eduarda has answered

How do researchers know which research method to use for their study?

The decision to use one of these over another depends mostly on what exactly the researchers are trying to find or understand, that is the aim of the study. as each has different strengths and limitations. An experiment, for example, is more appropriate for studies needing a lot of control and precision, especially when it comes to determining if the variable the researchers are interested in can directly cause an outcome. For example, if a psychologist is looking at the effect of listening to music on academic performance, they could use this method to get some participants to listen to music and others not while doing, for example, a reading task. This allows them to determine that the cause of how well they do is music listening. Also, they could be very accurate and make sure they all listen in the same volume, they do not have any other distractions, they have the same amount of time, etc, making sure no other variables affect their study. To put this in perspective, if these psychologists used a survey simply asking participants whether they listen to music while studying or not and also how good their grades are in school, their results would not be as accurate. There is no way to know if the reason for their grades is specifically music listening because there are many other factors that could affect their grades, such as stress, IQ level and motivation. However, if a psychologist wants to investigate, for example, how students use their social skills to make friends in school, an experiment would not be an appropriate method as it would not replicate the natural environment where students interact, and therefore the results would not be an actual representation of the real world scenarios. Therefore, the researcher may prefer to use an observational method, where they can simply watch real-life interactions between students and analyse them to make a conclusion.  The decision to use one of these over another depends mostly on what exactly the researchers are trying to find or understand, that is the aim of the study. as each has different strengths and limitations.
