About me

Hi, my name is Tabby, and I graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class degree in English Language and Literature in July 2017. Since then, I have been tutoring English Language and Literature to a range of students for GCSE, A Level, IB and at University level. English has always been my favourite subject, as it allows you to think so creatively and broadly across a wide range of texts and ideas. One of the main reasons I enjoy English is also one of the things which can make it most challenging - the fact that there often aren't right or wrong answers, only different interpretations and ways of connecting together the clues of a text. However, this also makes it exciting, and I hope to use our lessons, whilst covering and consolidating material for exams, to instil some of this excitement into your studies.

Having successfully applied to Oxford from a state school, which didn’t provide me with much guidance on the admissions process, I have first-hand experience of tackling the system single-handedly, from the ELAT to the interview - and I would be keen to pass on advice and guidance on navigating what can often seem a very nerve-wracking and impenetrable process!

I also run weekly creative writing workshops for 11-18 year olds, covering poetry, prose and drama, and work as a script reader and literary assistant for the Finborough Theatre in London. I spend most of my free time working on my own creative writing.

I will structure our sessions entirely around what you, the student, want or need to gain from them. I am aware that everyone learns best in different ways and will work on honing a teaching style which works for you. I believe strongly in the importance of developing confidence in students, particularly in subjects like English, where there is a strong focus on giving and supporting your own opinions. We will work together to identify the areas where you need some help to improve and focus on getting you as comfortable and as at ease as possible with the material and the skills required for the exam. Our sessions will be focused but flexible, ensuring we cover everything you want to cover, in a clear, structured and enjoyable way.
