About me

Hi, I'm Rhiannon and I'm in my second year of medicine at university. I love studying biology and am now learning how to apply the study of human biology to health and disease. I enjoyed GCSEs and A levels and found the exams daunting but doable. I always tried to feel like I was well prepared for each exam.

I'll hopefully be able to help students by improving their understanding of each topic. I find that understanding makes learning it easier! I find that diagrams, mind maps and flow charts are excellent ways of getting to grips with tricky ideas and condense what could be a lot of learning into smaller chunks.

Applying to University can be a lot of work. If you are sitting entrance exams or being interviewed it can be difficult to know how to prepare and what they are looking for, especially if you don't know anyone who has gone through the process before you. However, it's also extremely exciting and easy to motivate yourself to keep at it.

At Uni, I'm part of the university hockey team. It involves a lot of training and matches but there is also a lively social side to the club! I am a personal tutor for students applying from underprivileged backgrounds. The Project Access scheme helps them to get to grips with the environment before coming to Cambridge and decide if it's right for them, and helps them once they arrive.

About my sessions

The session can be structured in a variety of ways depending on what the student feels they need at the time. We could do a general overview of a particular topic; go through content that the student is struggling with, making sure they understand the key points and feel more comfortable with it; or go through a range of smaller questions that the student has come across during their revision.

The session can be structured in a variety of ways depending on what the student feels they need at the time. We could do a general overview of a particular topic; go through content that the student is struggling with, making sure they understand the key points and feel more comfortable with it; or go through a range of smaller questions that the student has come across during their revision.

I have found that the most effective way to deliver a session is to go through the content together, regularly asking the student to explain their understanding. It is important to understand the student's knowledge so that you can identify errors and avoid teaching them something you already know. Explaining something is also an effective way of revising for the student. If the tutor is doing the explaining, then it's important to continually check that the student is following. Throughout the session, I will try to give mini quiz questions so that it is interactive and engaging. At the end of the session, if we have time, we can go through some past questions on the topic.

I will prepare for the session by reading up on the topic, designing quiz questions and looking at past papers. I will probably make my own notes which I will refer to during the sessions. Depending on the topic and the student, delivery could be discussion based or question based, and will make use of the whiteboard to help explain the content!
