About me

My name’s Olivia and I’m a 21-year-old medical student at King’s College London. I've been tutoring since I was at college and love watching my students grow in ability and confidence. I have a real passion and enjoyment for my subjects and aim to impart this to my students, as I believe it is the greatest motivator for success.

As well as tutoring I also have non-academic teaching experience as an assistant sailing instructor and a volunteer teacher for the charity Sexpression, which provides SHR education to schools in London. Alongside this, I am the outreach coordinator for the King's College London branch of the breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! which aims to encourage young people to check themselves regularly. Whilst I’m lucky enough to be studying my chosen subject at university, it took a lot of hard work to get here and I’m very aware of how stressful it can be trying to achieve the grades you need. I used to find sitting exams difficult and my poor health at school meant I was constantly playing catch-up with my work. I often felt like I wouldn’t get the grades I needed to go to med school but I’m proof that with the right guidance, support, and determination, anyone can achieve their exam goals.

About my sessions

I believe in a personalised approach to teaching and so always have an introductory session with my students to talk about their strengths, weaknesses and aims, which enables me to better plan my lessons. This is also where we can discuss relevant exam board specifications or curriculums to ensure I cover all core content required. Some students may want to work through a course systematically, whilst others prefer to base lessons around what they are working on at school.

One of the ways I aim to impart my passions onto my students, is by never restricting my students’ knowledge! If there’s a topic or area which particularly interests them, I am always happy to go beyond the syllabus to ensure the lessons are engaging and enjoyable. I find that additional information can often provide context which makes difficult topics easier to grasp.

Finally, I'm very conscious that one of the biggest challenges for many people is learning how to learn! It sounds silly, but everyone reaches a stage in their academic career where they find they need more tailored study and revision techniques to help them understand and retain the knowledge they're being taught. For this reason, I aim to cover at least one session on study skills and revision techniques with all of my students, to help ensure they can continue learning effectively outside of our lessons.
