Hi!

My name's David, and I'm currently studying for an integrated masters in maths! I've been passionate about my subject since about the age of 18 - I originally chose my A Levels with the idea of doing a Physics degree, but fell in love with the intricacies of pure maths before long. What I really love about maths is the way that you can often break questions down in to things you can already solve, and build your knowledge up that way. My tutoring strategy is to do exactly this - breal questions down until we get to a list of key skills that the student is either already proficient is or will be soon with some practice. I focus on checking understanding throughout the workings of a question, not just the ability to get a right answer.

I'm currently employed as a teacher of first years at the University of Warwick, and I also enjoy working as a tutor in my spare time. I'm really excited about small group and individual teaching - I love being able to see such clear signs of progress and understanding in my students, a level of attention that is very hard to give in a large class.

About my sessions

My lessons will focus on a topic that the student has told me they are struggling with, normally in advance for the sake of preparation. A typical session will involve going through questions of increasing difficulty, identifying areas where there is confusion in these questions and going over the relevant theory. I focus a lot on improving confidence - even the most difficult A Level questions rely on the use of a few skills that improve with practice. I train my students to break down questions in this way, so the exam becomes more like a lot of 1 mark questions rather than several harder ones.

I thoroughly enjoy all my tutoring and try to gauge process passively at all times - I believe this gives a deeper understanding of the student's thought process than just test questions. Ultimately, I aim to work with my students so they can reach their goals, and see that they had success in them all along!
