About me

I have always had a passion for biology, but could never narrow my passion for it down further. I went from aspiring to study medicine to veterinary, biochemistry to ecology, and eventually found my calling: genetics. Genetics is the basis for evolution, which is, in turn, the basis for biology. As Theodosius Dobzhansky once said, “nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution”, and evolution doesn’t make sense except in the light of genetics! I am more focused on the conservation and developmental side of genetics and am writing my second-year review paper on the evolutionary basis for limb loss in snakes.

I also really enjoyed maths and chemistry in school, as well as languages. I am studying several chemistry and biochemistry modules and am taking a French module on top of my genetics degree. Over the years, I have taught myself conversational German and Welsh, and am hoping to improve my French to a high enough level that will allow me to study my master’s degree in France.

Through mentoring, I hope to meet likeminded students and help them further their own passions, allowing them to find the field that is perfect for them. I think one of the best things about science is its potential to change the world and, for me, the perfect student is one who both recognises this and is eager for their opportunity to make that change.

About my sessions

As I mentioned above, I have a great passion for all of the subjects I tutor in, and I hope this comes through in my teaching style. I want to make sure my lessons are both informative and memorable, ensuring content is consolidated in a unique yet extremely useful way.

I myself am an auditory learner, so generally work best when using diagrams, mind maps, and flash cards. These techniques worked well for me all throughout my school career, but I have also dabbled in other techniques. For biology specifically, I feel visual learning is the way to go, so will incorporate many diagrams, flow charts, and figures in my lessons. For chemistry and maths, I believe the best mode of action is just that: action. I will provide lots of example questions to ensure that you don’t just memorise content, but are able to apply it to a variety of question styles too. For French (and languages in general), the best learning style is definitely auditory. For oral examinations, a proportion of marks come from having correct pronunciation and an authentic sounding accent, so I will engage my students in conversations, as well as the typical grammar and translation exercises.
