I left St Bernards Grammar School where I studied until I was 18 with high A-Level Grades (A*- English Literature, A- Classical Civilisation, B- Biology). I was very lucky at the time to be privileged enough to have a very capable tutor who taught me the formula necessary to pass exams and do well in them, something I pass on to all my students.

I am studying English Literature after studying Biology for a year and, whilst I found it interesting, I felt my skills were much more advanced and better suited to English. I am an avid reader, having read widely from Ovid, Sophocles, to Dickens, to more contemporary writers such as Virginia Woolf, William Goulding, Oscar Wilde and so on. My passion for reading widely is due to my firm belief that a person who is well read, is well rounded, for reading requires a specific cognitive processing that cannot be learned in any other walk of life.

I am familiar with the syllabus requirements for most exam boards (OCR, EDEXCEL, AQA to name but a few) across A-Level and GCSE and studying past exam papers is an integral part of my teaching.

About my sessions

I structure my lessons depending on the pupil; I am a firm believer that we all learn and process information differently. I structure my lessons depending on the pupil; I am a firm believer that we all learn and process information differently. It is thus, very important then to first assess how a pupil processes information- perhaps they are auditory learner, in which case my lessons would be structured to appeal to that sense by employing devices such as music and song to help retain certain information. Perhaps they are a more visual learner, in which case I would utilise diagrams and pictures to explain concepts. For A-Level and GCSE I feel it is very helpful to become familarised with exam papers and the style of questioning as early as possible, so I always incorporate those into my lesson plans. Importantly, however, are the goals of the student; what do they hope to achieve from our sessions? where would they like to be in terms of their academic progress? Communication is key with a mentor for success, and I adopt the same approach with all my tutees.
