Hi there,

I am currently studying Physics with Astronomy at Durham University. The fact that physics is central and so crucial to everyday life is why I think it is exciting. It has application in industry, in healthcare, in travel and much more. Many of the ideas we learn about cause you to challenge your everyday perceptions of life. Here are two of my favourite; firstly, the atoms that make up our human body (all 10 octillion of them), actually came from stars when they explode. Secondly, time is not constant. The passing of a second is not the same for everybody. When you approach the speed of light (the fastest thing in the universe), time dilates, and you experience the aging process differently. If you were to leave earth at the speed of light and return, it is possible for you to return younger than your children! Applying to university is a hard process that places a lot of stress and pressure to do well in your examinations. I think it's best to try and forget about what grades you need, and do not let it hinder your performance. Try and use it to motivate yourself to study. At university, I am a member of the college pool team and football team. On top of this, I help coach the Women's Football team as well as being a member of the Feminist Society.

About my sessions

My experience of school was a fond one. In terms of examinations, all it takes is practice and I think the key is truly understanding the material given in school, often something that is overlooked. Teachers do their best to help but sometimes, particularly with maths and physics, many people don't put the time into understanding the material, instead just learning it off. That is what I would attempt to help with in tutoring.

I tried many learning techniques in school, and what is important to realise is that there isn't one solution for every body to use. It is about figuring out the best method for yourself, something I will try and help with. What worked for me is revising the material in blocks of fifty minutes, with a ten minute break at the end. Once all the material has been learnt, it's best to try and do past paper questions. That would be the structure of the online lessons. Try and help with understanding of any material, and then once this has been achieved, run through past paper questions, which often get repeated. Understanding and practicing works much better than wrote learning.

Matt is just a wonderful tutor - my son has gone from a 6 to a predicted 9 in GCSE maths with his help. My son really enjoys the lessons! Matt communicates promptly and plans ahead. I can't recommend him enough.

I have done 4 lessons with Matthew to try and reinforce a couple of topics that I really struggled with. I found that Matthew was a very calm and relaxed tutor, he took his time explaining the topic until he knew I understood. He then would set me questions which he was always ready to help me with. Over all I found my sessions with Matthew extremely helpful and I feel much more confident - Oliver

Matthew is great and very understanding. He is doing a great job with helping to improve a young gentleman who is trying to improve on his Maths. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
