About me

Hello, I still remember some of my best teachers, they got me into Plato and Thucididyes, nurtered my love of American politics and supported my writing and public speaking. I want to be one of those teachers for you, I love politics and history well beyond having studied both for years. Good teachers allowed me to explore esoteric avenues of interest and gave me pride in my talent and ability.

A little about me: Academically I began to achieve once I could specialise. For my A and AS levels I achieved 100% in 7/12 papers taken. This prompted The Council for Independent Education (CIFE) to give me an award in The House of Lords. I went to Cambridge University to study Human Social and Political Science receiving a 2:1. In the future I intend to do a Masters in Elections and Campaign Management in New York.

Outside of institutions I have worked in City Hall, interviewed Boris Johnson MP and Lynne Featherstone former MP and started a magazine on current affairs that raised £1,300 for Marie Curie Cancer.

I am patient and thoughtful but also earnest in the subjects I teach. Few things give me more joy than talking and engaging in history and politics with others.

Finally I have two years of experience as a tutor online having worked for the TutorBank since 2016, this has given me invaluable experience in tutoring others and learning the do's and dont's of doing so.

About my sessions

Sessions with each tutee will be different of course. There is no set formula and everyone has their strenghts and weaknesses. That said there are common themes which I will use.

Firstly given these are essay subjects there will be a strong focus on building arguments, whether that is verbally or via essays I hope to improve your ability to write cogent and precise pieces of writing.

We will also look at source material. Improving your skills of analysis and learning to place it in a wider context via background reading and historiograhpy.

Next I will steer you towards lesser known books, documentaries and tv shows which contain nuanced information that will impress the examiners.

I hope to help you achieve higher marks and also dare I say it nurture a passion for the subject you are studying.

I will do this by patience, encouragement, and passion while endeavouring to be as available as possible especially as we get closer to exams.

Questions Max has answered

Is The Tea Party still a force in American politics?

The Tea Party began in 2009 in response to what they deemed excessive government intervention (e.g. TARP, ObamaCare, the stimulus). Aligning itself with the Republican party it stressed ideological purity and fiscal conservatism and helped the Republican Party win The House of Representatives in 2010. In its early years its influence was supreme; in the House: the newly formed Freedom Caucus pushed the Republican conference rightward and helped depose John Boehner who they deemed too moderate. In the Senate: Rand Paul led a 12 hour filibuster over a government surveillance program that went viral, while Ted Cruz helped shut down the government in 2013 to protest ObamaCare. Four election cycles and a President later the situation is more complicated. While still a force in American politics it is a diminished one in the wake of the right wing populism of President Trump. Republicans are no longer evaluated by their fealty to small government ideology but rather to the cult of personality of the President himself. This new status can be seen in the changed fortunes of Tea Party stalwarts: Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are isolated in the Senate, The Freedom Caucus were blamed for sinking the first ObamaCare repeal in the House, and the Koch brothers have been replaced by the Mercers as the billionaires-du-jour. All in all while The Tea Party is still a force in American politics it does not have the influence or reach that it used to.The Tea Party began in 2009 in response to what they deemed excessive government intervention (e.g. TARP, ObamaCare, the stimulus).
