About me

My name is Maya and I'm currently a first year medical student studying at the University of Manchester. I think what makes me stand out as a student is being well-rounded. I am confident when it comes to interacting with new people, and voluntary and previous tutoring experiences have taught me how to adapt my style of communication and teaching style to meet the preference of different students.

Preparing for medical school is challenging, particularly studing for the UKCAT and practising for medical interviews, which fortunately, I was successful in all 4 of mine. With medical school interviews, the most important thing is getting lots of practise at speaking to people about yourself, and because I was successful with both the UKCAT and recieving offers from my interviews, hopefully my advice and tutoring will be useful for students going through the same experience that I went through.

I also tutor GCSE Spanish, Biology and Chemistry, which i recieved A* in at GCSE level. Spanish was one of my favourite subjects at school; for revision, I found that going over vocabulary and grammar was very helpful but most importantly, practising my orals regularly. . With Biology and Chemistry, we will go through difficult topics in more detail and will practise exam techniques which is the best way to get full marks on exam questions.

About my sessions

I think the first session will be fairly introductory, in that I’d like to find out what specific areas/subjects the student is finding difficult and perhaps why, so that I can plan sessions ahead of time. If necessary, together we can make a list of topics that the student would like to cover.

When it comes to subjects like Biology and Chemistry, I find going through exam questions and practising answering exam style questions can be very useful for revision, especially longer questions which often require more content. I will try to test the student on a regular basis to make sure they are understanding what we are going through but will encourage them at all times to ask me if they are having any difficulties/problems, so that I can go back a re-explain something if necessary or change my style of tutoring. For Spanish, I can organise regular vocabulary or grammar tests to help the students or can also do mock orals with them, providing both positive and constructive feedback.

I make my sessions as interactive and relaxed as possible and will try to tailor the sessions to each student, so they can make the most out of the experience.

Maya has been great and has helped my son prepare for his Spanish oral GCSE. She has been flexible with the timing and this was really useful as i live in Dubai.
