About me

I am in my first year of studying History at Oxford. I've always enjoyed history because it is a central part of understanding how our world works; culture, identity and politics all arise from our past, as well as our connection to and interpretation of it. It is also a subject where there are many interesting debates and discussion. I hope to encourage that enthusiasm in others and share a real enjoyment of history or English by making lessons interesting and encouraging discussion. I h...

I have experience in tutoring as I helped teach younger students at school and was an instructor at my local martial arts classes. This means I am confident teaching all ages and students with English as a second language. I took exams in History and English at both GCSE, AS- and A-Level, and I continue to use the similar skills in my degree. I strongly emphasis exam technique and getting the most out of the mark scheme; something which I know works well as I went from a B in History AS-Level to an A* at A-Level by reassessing how I structured my essays and addressed the question. My lessons are enjoyable and informative, and personalised to address the areas in which a student struggles with. One of the most important aspects is to boost confidence so that they feel fully prepared when they go to take exams. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a message or book a meet-the-tutor session. I look forward to hearing from you!

About my sessions

My lesson style is flexible in order to address what the students struggle with. When booking a session, I will ask about the areas the student would like to focus on, as well as the exam board so that I can look at the mark schemes and criteria. During the session, I will use these as I take the student through how to approach a question or a source and produce detailed essay plans that they can also use as notes. Throughout, I will make sure that the student understands completely and can address any areas of the syllabus where clarification is needed. For most of the time, I will tend to focus on exam technique and how to write essays which exploit the exam criteria for the most marks possible. However, if the student is struggling with the syllabus’ content we can spend more time those areas and how to revise effectively. I want students to go into an exam with both the knowledge and the confidence that they can tackle any style of question, analyse and use sources effectively, and structure an essay which meets all the criteria. I would like to see past work to see what stage the student is at and what the teacher’s comments recommend; I can clarify what they are looking for and help to pursue it. At the end of each lesson, I will ask what the student would like to look at next so I can plan the next session and they can relate tutoring back to revision and classes. I will also provide a summary of what was covered in the session.

She is AMAZING! She was a massive help with both English and History. I don't know where I'd be without these lessons. Thank you Bethan! Best wishes, Filippo.
