I am currently a Postgraduate student studying an MMus in music performance on the saxophone at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I was awarded my undergraduate degree with honours from the University of Manchester, where I achieved a First Class. In my final year, I focused on performance, achieving high marks across all performance-based modules. Whilst completing my degree I also achieved my grade 8 in piano.

I was a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Session) leader for the university for two years where I received teacher training in order to help first-year students adjust to university and degree life. I was also involved with the outreach program. Here I inspired primary school children to get involved with music and also learn about music. Understanding the mechanics of music and what makes the music we hear enjoyable and less so is what has driven me to explore music as a degree and the enjoyment I get from my playing has led me even further to study saxophone as a masters.

About my sessions

Being a PASS tutor at the university teaching first years has really given me the grounding of how to teach and structure a great session for both the student and myself. I believe a hands-on approach is the best for music. Music is designed for your ears so actively listening and playing as well as looking at the scores and books is the best way tackle music, so I will take most of my sessions with a piano next to me. I found hearing things and working through them on the piano really helped me to improve through GCSE and A level as well as to be a better musician.

For Drama I believe in a similar approach, throughout my GCSE and A level I spent most of the time drawing or acting out what I wished to achieve, linking ideas to physical images for myself. Later for the exam it really helped me picture what I was going to write out when directing a particular scene or designing a character.

Mathematics I found repetition a very helpful technique, much like practicing an instrument it got better and better each time. Practicing loads of questions so then the student themselves can create their own is one of the best ways I’ve found in teaching mathematics.
