About me

I am currently a graduand of the University of Manchester and I am preparing for a masters in music performance at the Royal Welsh Conservatoire for Music and Drama. Music has been a love that I have grown up with since beginning playing the saxophone as a hobby in year 7. Music has been a love that I have grown up with since beginning playing the saxophone as a hobby in year 7. Understanding the mechanics of music and what makes the music we hear enjoyable and less so is what has driven me to explore music as a degree as well as the great enjoyment I get from my playing. Taking mathematics and drama up to A level standard I have similar passions for them as I do for music, drama especially as I find it goes hand in hand with music. It is this passion and enjoyment I have found I wish to pass on to the next generation.

About my sessions

Being a PASS tutor at the university teaching first years has really given me the grounding of how to teach and structure a great session for both the student and myself. I believe a hands-on approach is the best for music. Music is designed for your ears so actively listening and playing as well as looking at the scores and books is the best way tackle music, so I will take most of my sessions with a piano next to me. I found hearing things and working through them on the piano really helped me to improve through GCSE and A level as well as to be a better musician.

For Drama I believe in a similar approach, throughout my GCSE and A level I spent most of the time drawing or acting out what I wished to achieve, linking ideas to physical images for myself. Later for the exam it really helped me picture what I was going to write out when directing a particular scene or designing a character.

Mathematics I found repetition a very helpful technique, much like practicing an instrument it got better and better each time. Practicing loads of questions so then the student themselves can create their own is one of the best ways I’ve found in teaching mathematics.
