If 3(x-2)-4(x+5)=10 , what is the value of x?

To answer this question we need to combine like terms so that we do not have multiple x's. Knowing the order of operations is key here. First, we must multiple the coefficients outside the parentheses with the portions of the equation inside. Remember to multiply both parts of the expression, and to multiply by -4! After doing this, we have 3x-6-4x-20=10. Now, combine like terms. This results in -x-26=10. Multiply the entire equation by -1 so that x is positive. This results in x+26=-10. Now subtract 26 from both sides. The answer we are left with is x=-36.
