What are methods of promotion?

There are six main methods of promotion that businesses can use. The first method is advertising, which is above-the-line promotion, and involves any form of advertising such as TV or radio adverts, billboards, posters and newspaper adverts. Other methods of promotion are known as below-the-line methods and these are sales promotions, word of mouth, public relations, personal selling and direct marketing. These methods can be used alone or in conjuction with one another, for example a business may have a sales promotion and use newspaper adverts to make people aware of this sales promotion. Businesses decide which method of promotion to use based on the product or services they are promoting and the customers they are promoting their product to.
