What themes are explored by a Russian book you have read?

Pushkin subverts the European and Russian literary genres, by hybridising them both in his novel-in-verse Evgenii Onegin. Thus, but not fully complying to either of the traditions of his time, he manages to form a new Russian literary culture. This can be seen at it's best in the novel's ending. Portraying the novel’s paradox, the ending is neither comic nor tragic, but rather unsatisfying. The two main characters do not marry each other, as would have been the conclusion to a comedy, nor does one of them die as would have occurred in a tragedy. Tat’ana, unlike when she sees Onegin for the first time, does not fulfill the role of the heroines she read about and adored, instead choosing to show honour and remain restrained by a society that she loathes. All we know of Onegin is that he goes off travelling, either to find love or join the Decembrists movement. The pathos aroused in the ending of the novel by the lack of action from Tat’iana to succumb to her emotions, from Onegin choosing to not repeat a pursuit of a married woman and from the narrator to not continue the story of their lives exemplifies the relationship between all three characters and the meaning of this novel; The Russian-loving Tat’iana rejects the European Onegin despite having to defy her emotions for him, just as Pushkin rejects European literature in order to liberate Russia into its own cultural independence. The life-like narrative of Tat’iana and Onegin is correspondent with Pushkin’s self-conscious narration. It is not confusion that a reader feels from the relationship between the three characters, but dissatisfaction with the lack of a dramatic ending.
