Jane Eyre can be referred to as a Bildungsroman; it follow the journey of character development and growth by Jane as she leaves home and finds her place in 19th century Britain. She is autonomous in the sense that she has always felt ostracised since becoming an orphan, especially so due to the maltreatment by her aunt who locks her in the "Red Room".strongly pursues her morals and freedom, declining to become Mr Rochester's mistress.
