What is the role of research in medicine? Have you read any medical research recently; what was it?

Research is important in all aspects of medicine. It is being used to improve understanding in all aspects of medicine, from direct research into pathology to how best to teach medical students. Take for instance the research conducted by a large study group across Europe and America. They conducted a longitudinal study over the course of 20 years looking at type 1 diabetic patients and aimed to work out the safest and most effective method of taking insulin. This was a watershed discovery for the treatment of diabetes as it now helps us to improve long term outcomes for these patients.
