Solve the equation (2x-4)/2 + (6x+1)/3 = (16x+10)/12.

To solve this equation for x we must first make sure there is a common denominator across the whole equation. In this case as 2 and 3 are both factors of 12, meaning 12 can be divided by them to generate another whole number, 12 can be the common denominator, so the right hand side of the equation doesn't need changing. For the left hand side to make a common denominator, multiply the first term on top and bottom by 6, and for the second term multiply top and bottom by 4. Once this is done the equation will look like this 6(2x-4)/12 +4(6x+1)/12 = (16x+10)/12. Now we can multiply both sides of the equation by 12 to remove the fraction, and then expand each bracket to give us: 12x-24+24x+4=16x+10. Now we must collect terms on each side giving us 36x-20=16x+10, and when moving all x terms to the left and side and all non x terms to the right we get the equation 20x=30. We then get x=30/20 so x=1.5.
