The External intercostals contract and the diaphragm flattensPulling the thoracic cavity up and out This then increases the volume of the thoracic cavity, Causing a reduction of pressure in the lungs compared to atmospheric pressure.This produces airflow down the pressure gradient from an area of high to low pressure and into the lungs.
