Describe Attribution Theory. What do coaches most commonly attribute failure to and why?

  • Attribution Theory is a method of linking success or failure to internal or external and stable or unstable factors. -Internal table factor is ability, a coach would say we won because we are good. This improves self-efficacy and will help them to win more games.

-An internal unstable factor would be effort. A loss may have been down to good ability but a lack of motivation. By saying the factor is unstable, it is subject to improvement.

The difficulty of a task is external and stable.

Luck is external and unstable. This is the best way to attribute theory. Essentially, it wasn't our fault and won't happen again. This protects confidence and self-efficacy.
