How do you translate the pluperfect tense?

A verb in the pluperfect can be either active or passive.

When a verb is in the active form it is translated as 'I had x-ed' in the first person.

x here refers to the verb used.

Example: portaveram = I had carried

When a verb is in the passive form, the first person is translated as 'I had been x-ed'.

Example: portatus eram = I had been carried
