After the genetic material is duplicated and condenses in Prophase, there are still 46 chromosomes but they exist in an X-shape, where two sister-chromatids are attached to each other by a centromere. Therefore a cell in prophase and metaphase would have 46 chromosomes and 92 chromatids.
