What is postmodernism?

Postmodernists are theorists in sociology, contrasting with modernists, who believe that we have left modern society and are instead currently in postmodern society. Most theories covered in sociology e.g. traditional Marxists and functionalists take a modernist stance. The main idea of postmodern society is the breaking down of societal structures - e.g. the class structure that Marxists talk about, or a decrease in religion (also known as secularisation) - and the blurring of boundaries (such as in gender, where for some people it is now less simple than either being male or female). So compared to modern society, it is much less rigid, with less structures and boundaries. Postmodernism is basically an explanation of how society has become much more complex and diverse, with an increased focus on individual choice and freedom.
