What is the difference between ser and estar?

As a general rule think about ser being a permanent description and estar being temporary.

For example, to say someone is tall, use ser and you if you are saying that they look tall today you would use estar as it is how they appear temporarily.

How do you know whether to use the preterite tense or the imperfect tense?

Give a few examples of when you would use the imperfect tense?
