Joe tells us what he enjoys about tutoring

Joe is a second year history student at University College, London, and he has provided over 50 hours of tuition with MyTutor. We caught up with him to learn more.

What do you enjoy doing outside of your degree?

Outside of my degree I play guitar, sing, do a few gigs, write songs, and also do radio stuff at the uni - so just quite a lot of music-y things.

Had you done any tutoring before MyTutor?

I’ve done some teaching and tutoring before MyTutor - I worked in a school in Thailand for a year and taught kids from all ages. I also did some one-on-one help for music coursework and just really enjoyed it!

Did you receive any tutoring when you were younger?

I received some tutoring - in about year 8 - when I was struggling with Maths. I had tutoring and it really helped - I managed to get an A in GCSE maths in the end which was really good for me. I think tutoring can be really beneficial, it’s another person to help you and offer a different perspective.

What do you like about MyTutor?

It’s really great feeling like you’re helping, feeling like you’re actually helping students develop and do better in their classes.

Tell me about a student who stands out in your memory

I think one student who stood out for me was Bradley - in his first session he was looking like he really didn’t want to be there and not concentrating that much. Eventually he got more comfortable and we got a lot more work done. I helped him improve with his writing and that sort of thing, and we ended up sort of getting on quite well. So it’s nice when you can see your student getting more comfortable and becoming more engaged in the lessons.

What changes do you see in your students?

In the first tutoring session I always find they can be a little bit shy, a little bit awkward, and then three or four in they’re talking at you, they’re giving you ideas so you can sort of see them blossom - it’s great! They just get a bit more confident and comfortable.
