How to work out a fraction of an amount?

The key rule is to divide the amount by the denominator and multiply by the nominator. E.g:

3/5 of 45£

divide by the denominator 45/5=9

multiply by the nominator  9*3=27

Solve the simultaneous equations 'x-2y=3' and 'x^2+2y^2=27'
