Work out 2^3 + 4^2

When a number is raised to a power, that means the number is multiplied by itself. The power (the small number) shows how many times we need to multiply the big number by itself. Therefore: 2^3 can be split into 222 (2 multiplied by itself three times) 4^2 can be split into 44 (4 multiplied by itself twice) 222 + 44 = 8 + 16 = 24
