In a class there are 12 girls and 18 boys. what proportion of the girls are there in the class? Simplify

the total number of students in the class would be 12 girls plus 18 boys which is 30 in total. The proportion of the girls would mean dividing the number of girls by the total number of students so 12/30. as 12 is equal to 2 x 2 x 3 and 30 is equal to 2 x 3 x 5 (prime factors), then we can simplify the fraction by 2 x 3 which is 6. the final fraction becomes 2/5 which is also 40 percent.
