Solve 4(x+3)=2x+8

First explain that to 'solve' means to find the value for 'x'. Then, using the rule of BIDMAS, explain that in order to simplify the process, the first step is to open up the brackets on the left hand side of the equation (can use diagram to show how to do this if student is unclear): 4(x+3) opens up to be 4x+12. Then set 4x+12 = 2x+8. Explain at this stage that in order to find the value of x, you need to have all the 'x's on one side of the equation, and all the numbers on the other side (in other words, isolate the x's and the numbers). For higher level students it suffices just to say 'move 2x to the left of the equation'. For those who are less confident explain clearly that everything you do to the right side of the equation, you must do the same to the left side of the equation. For example, you wish to get rid of the '2x' on the right side of the equation, so if you take away '2x' from the right, you must take away '2x' from the left. The same rule applies with the numbers 12 and 8. This leaves you with 2x=-4.In order to get to 'x', divide both sides by 2 (remembering the rule, if you do something to one side, you must do the same to the other). The final answer is therefore x=-2. Note that it can be useful to check your answer if you substitute the value for x back into the equation to see if it will still hold.
