You are designing a costume for Abigail to wear in Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible'. Describe your costume ideas. Your design should reflect the setting of Miller's play.

Miller’s play is set in the 17th century exploring the life of a Puritan community living in Salem therefore I am aiming to design a costume which would be fitting for the time period. Puritans were advocates of modesty and as Abigail is a young unmarried girl I would be designing a long-length, loose shift to be worn as an undergarment. It would be covered by a long dark grey gown as the outer clothing. Taking that protecting purity is in the heart of their culture my design would include a close-fitting coif to cover Abigail’s hair as it would be deemed unseemly if her hair was on the show. It would be a piece of clothing which she might lose as her behavior becomes more and more rebellious and radical as the plot moves along. Lastly, due to her social standing as an orphan in the community she would also be wearing an apron over her skirt.
