How should I begin my personal statement?

The most important thing about your opening statement is that it needs to get to the point. Make sure you don't open with a famous quote. I actually did this when I first drafted my personal statement, but was soon advised that this was not a good move. You don't have many characters to make your case, so you need to use every word wisely. Ultimately you are trying to prove that you are a good candidate for your chosen course. Start by thinking about why you want to study this course, and make this the core of your opening statement. Try and be specific. Don't simply say "I have always been passionate about English Language..." Make a statement which points to a specific aspect of your enthusiasm for the subject. The more genuine and natural you can make your personal statement the better.
