What is the Literal rule?

The literal rule is simply the law in its literal sense; it is followed and applied as it is read, for example in the case of Berry, as he wasn't repairing the line he was maintaining the line Mrs. Berry couldn't claim compensation. This rule could be seen as unfair and doesn't take into account any other views.
