The number of questions I have to answer in the time is overwhelming! How can I make the most of my time during the UKCAT test?

The key to passing the UKCAT is to keep your momentum going throughout the test. Its easy to give up and trip into the pitfall of thinking you can't possibly do your best when your clock is slowly ticking away. If you stay calm and use a few tricks when working through the test you'll find you can easily achieve the best scores you can when the time comes. I'll briefly outline the techniques I used when I was taking the UKCAT:

  1. Learn to assess how difficult the question is - quickly. With practice you can start to identify harder questions by sight. This is important as harder questions will often take longer and you may end up wasting time working on one question where you could have answered three easier questions in the same time.

  2. Learn to eliminate. Its easier and (often) quicker to work through questions by elimination. When approaching a question there may be 4 possible answers. If you had to guess the answer at this point you have a 1/4 chance of being right. At this point there are 2 ways to go - you can work out the problem from scratch (time consuming) or you can take a look at the answers and see if any stick out and are obviously wrong. If you take the second aproach you may be able to elimate 2 answers and your odds of making a correct guess are now 1/2 - making guessing a much more successful technique.

  3. Rest during breaks. It's easy to feel worn out during the test but between each section there are small minute breaks as well as screens giving you instructions. If you are already family with the instructions (memorize them before hand) you can use these screens as a longer break, giving you time to rest.
