This is a discursive essay which falls under the topics of lifestyle and youth culture.
Note: The essay must strictly adhere to the 180-200 word limit, especially in Russian as there will be penalties.
The essay's breakdown of marks are as follows: (Edexcel Unit 3 Russian)
15m - Response - Simply put - "Did you answer the question?"
15m - Organisation and development - How well presented and legible is your essay.
10m - Range of Language - Your vocabulary - the bigger, the better the mark
5m - Accuracy - Grammar
The mark is out of 45 and as can be seen the content is key. Response and Organisation go hand in hand. You can't score well in one and poorly in the other as then your content would be incoherent and therefore impossible to mark.
Since this is a discursive essay you must spend time planning it. The default "go to" essay plan is:
Introduction - Start it off with a bit of wit, controversy or fancy language to catch the attention of the examiner.
e.g - В настоящее время мир интернетa и онлайн-игр выглядит как смертельная паутина неся собою мириады пагубныx привычек.
Follow it up with a brief 2-3 lines about what your main argument will entail.
Main Argument - This should be 2 paragraphs one that says why you agree that the internet is a danger to health and one that refutes it. You MUST always balance your argument in a discursive essay or you WILL lose half of your content points. If you are desperate to lean on a certain point feel free to do so in the conclusion. In the main argument you must play the devil's advocate with yourself. Start with the paragraph that you don't agree with and finish the main argument with the paragraph that you do agree with to allow for a smooth transition to the conclusion. Make sure you cover at least three effects or consequences in each argument. A large range is key.
E.g: Pros Cons
1. улучшение координации 1. отчуждение от друзей
2.улучшение креативности 2. потеря приоритетов
3. доступ ко многим идеям и мнениям 3. Проблемы со здоровьем
Conclusion - Gentle reminder... THIS IS THE LAST TIME YOU WILL BE ABLE TO IMPRESS THE EXAMINER (in this essay and since every essay question is marked by a different examiner this IS your last time to impress the examiner)
If you have picked a side to lean on dispute the other and support yours. If you haven't, why not, then give a balanced conclusion. In my experience the examiners like a strong opinion so I would suggest that in the conclusion you do pick a side. If you disagree with the newspaper article say something to dispute it:
Эта статья является вопиющей попыткой старшего поколения напугать родителей, чтобы отменить право их детей играть на компьютере.
And then follow it up with some evidence. And vice-versa.
If you have any questions about vocabulary or phrases to use I will be happy to provide.
Thanks
