La consecutio temporum (consequenzialità dei tempi in italiano) è un costrutto sintattico usato largamente nella lingua latina ma presente anche in diversi costrutti in italiano. Serve ad esprimere anteriorità, contemporaneità o posteriorità rispetto ad una azione nel presente o nel passato. Un esempio potrebbe essere l'uso del trapassato prossimo per esprime anteriorità rispetto all'imperfetto della principale nella frase seguente:
Io ero molto combattuto poichè Luca mi aveva messo di fronte ad una scelta difficile
