What are the basic differences between Chinese and English grammar?

One of the differences between Chinese and English grammar is that in Chinese, we do not use 'tenses' in the same way as in English. In other word, there is no such things as 'ed,' 'has' 'had,' 'shall be,' etc. This is because the form of a Chinese verb never changes, regardless of whether it is present, future or past tenses tec. For example, whereas in English, the verb ‘fall’ will become ‘fell’ in past tense, and ‘fallen’ in past perfect tense, in Chinese, the verb ‘fall’ will always be the same, and that is ‘掉下/坠落.’ (That is good news right!) So, now you may want to ask, how are we going to express we have done something in the past (or something has happened in the past) and that we are doing something at the moment (or something is happening at the moment) and that we wish to do something in the future (or something is going to happen in the future). And here is a simple answer: Chinese verbs will not change state, instead we add a time adverb or an aspect particle to the sentence to indicate past, present or future. Here is an example: in order to indicate completion of an action, the particle 了 (le) is added after the verb. Eg, ‘I have found a book.’ 我找到了一本书。In order to indicate a present tense, you often would use phrases such as: 正在 (now); 经常 (often) In order to indicate a past tense, you often would use phrase such as: 昨天 (yesterdy); 上星期 (last week) ; 上个月 (last month) ; 之前 (before) In order to indicate future tense, you often would use phrases such as 将来(in the near future); 下星期 (next week) 以后 (in due time) etc. NB: if you have used these ‘special phrase’ then you would not need to use tenses as these ‘special phrases’ have already specified the ‘state of time.’ I hope I have explained this first difference between Chinese and English grammar well.
