How should I structure my answer to this TSA question: Should we care more about the survival of animal species or the welfare of individual animals?

Should we care more about the survival of animal species or the welfare of individual animals?
You need to first of all decide on an argument. In this question it makes it easier to broadly pick one side of the argument. Coming in with a strong argument sets you up with a better structure and will also impress examiners more than a wishy-washy this-way-that-way argument. Go with your gut feeling. To be really impressive, I would say that you need to say something more than just one side e.g. survival of animal species is more important. For example, I would argue that survival of animal could be more important because different species can have uses for humans as well as other animals and ecologies. Whereas, the welfare of individual of animal will only be important in terms of an ethical debate and of use to that animal and the individual who owns it. (I don't necessarily agree with this but it is necessary to make a stand) Another thing to think about - survival is not necessarily equivalent to healthy and having good welfare. Welfare is in direct relation to our human-animal relations, whereas survival can be as a result of human intervention but also can be outside of our human-nature relations. You need to define 'welfare' - this could mean general species health, welfare as in the care of humans etc.
How I would structure my argument: Introduction - keep it brief! Introduce the topic and my argumentKeep it simple - this essay will argue...First this essay will discuss... Then this essay will discuss how Care paragraphHave a paragraph considering the concept of 'care' as this will set out why you justify either side. Do we care because it's useful to humanityDo we care because of broader ethicsCan address both these topics but makes the essay longer to addressPara 1: survival of species - positive reasonsI have chosen this as my disagree side, but you need to discuss the merits of both side so that you don't come across as unconsidered. For example, I might argue that survival of a species is important because it a) maintains biodiversity b) provides services c) is better for the environmentGive some examples of useful species e.g. bees (don't need facts but great if you have them!) Begin a brief deconstruction of this point Para 2: survival of species - negative reasonsSurvival of species doesn't necessarily mean they're thriving and contributing to environmental systemsWe can't save all species as too many are going extinct at once. Break down other points and compare briefly to your next topic but not too much as you haven't introduced it properly Para 3: welfare of animals - positive reaonsIn comparison, the welfare of animals is arguably far more useful. For example... Give lots of examples and link different pointsCome back to the question and remind the reader why we're answering this question in terms of 'caring'Acknowledge why some people might disagree but argue with thisConclusion!
