What does differentiation actually do?

Differentiation allows you to find the rate of change of a variable relative to another, which is basically the gradient. So if you had a speed-time graph, finding the amount that speed changes over a given time will get you acceleration.

Given that y = (3x^4 + x)^5, find dy/dx using the chain rule.

Differentiating equations of the type ln[f(x)]

The curve C has the equation y=((x^2+4)(x-3))/2*x where x is not equal to 0 . Find the tangent to the curve C at the point where x=-1 in the form y=mx+c

a typical question would be a setof parametric equations y(t) and x(t), asking you to find dy/dx and then the tangent/normal to the curve at a certain point (ie t = 2)
