What's the quadratic formula used for?

Firstly, it's important to understand what the formula is. It is essentially a re-arrangement of a quadratic equation, however the formula can be learnt so that it can be applied quickly within an exam context. In simple terms, the function of the formula is to find the roots of a quadratic equation. However, its function goes beyond this - the information can be taken and used in plotting a graph. The root values found are the points of interception with the X-axis. Further calculations can also be undertaken to gather more information to help in plotting the graph but this goes beyond quadratic formula.
